Vitamins Encapsulated
Eating right is only the beginning; behold the ABC's of
supplements
By Gretchen Reynolds
You've eliminated the "bad fats" and you're loading up on leafy
greens, but there's still something missing from your training
table. Chances are it's at your grocery store in one of those
mysterious brown bottles in the aisle of A's, B's and chewable
C's.

Walking for Wellness: Why Walk?
The Reality
The pace and
stresses of modern day life present many challenges to the
maintenance of good health. Busy and demanding schedules often
mean fast foods and little time for rest and relaxation. In
addition, we are bombarded with conflicting advertising about
weight loss and food. Many of us suffer from high blood
pressure, high serum cholesterol, and excess weight, which are
major risk factors associated with heart disease and stroke.
However, these risk factors can be decreased or prevented with
sensible diet and regular exercise. The road to a longer and
healthier life begins with your first steps toward
Walking for Wellness.
Walking
is one of the most frequently prescribed methods of exercise for
many preventable diseases. It is inexpensive, fun, relaxing,
and a healthy way to relieve stress. Due to the dual factors of
poor health status and low socioeconomic status, there is a
special focus on the importance of walking for Black women.
However, the benefits of this program transgress racial, gender,
and economic lines.
A
Simple Exercise Plan
The
Walking for Wellness program is a
health promotion and disease prevention program developed by the
National Black Women’s Health Project (NBWHP). Sisters, steeped
in the NBWHP tradition of self-help needed to add regular
physical activity to their wellness/self-care regimen.
Therefore, Walking for Wellness was
conceived as sisters "walking and talking" to promote their
wellness.
The program
promotes well-being through walking and talking about various
aspects of our lives. Participants are encouraged to walk as a
group at pre-selected sites at a self-selected pace for at least
30 minutes, three times a week.
Walking Groups
Work site
colleagues, church groups, neighborhood groups, tenant
associations, self-help groups, community groups, senior citizen
groups, school/residence hall groups, and others are encouraged
to implement a walking program. Group walking provides support
and helps to build group motivation to get and to stay fit.
