Celebrating Bayard Rustin From Ta'Shia Asanti

BE PRIDE!
I'm excited to present to you a feature from the June 2006 issue of Urban Spectrum Newspaper (US) written in honor of International African Pride and Power Month. This month and every month, US affirms the lives and work of SGLBT people. The article is titled, "Heroes in the Shadows," and celebrates the life and work of activist, Bayard Rustin.
In my new role as managing editor of the Urban Spectrum Newspaper I get to create new departments, hire new writers and facilitate a more diverse voice among my writing staff. I would love to receive article ideas and feature stories from the SGLBT community that speak to both het and homo readers and that connect the two communities in deeper and more meaningful ways. I am not looking for gay rants that attack straight folks for being homophobic. What I am seeking is stories that portray us as the phenomenal African-Americans we were and are, either back then or now. I am also looking for news that impacts all African Americans from a SGLBT perspective. We also do writer profiles--so if you'd like more than your press release published and you have a really good book, write me directly for book submission information.
FYI: The Urban Spectrum is 19 years old--one of the oldest Black newspapers in the country. It has won dozens of awards. We have 30,000 locall readers and half-million readers through the on-line version of our paper. There is pay for articles.
Query me first with your story ideas at allthewords@aol.com Please include word count. Check out the June issue at www.urbanspectrum.net
