This Is Fabulous!
Posted at June 12, 2006 10:25 PM in GLBTQ , News , Prides .I'm loving this. Jasmyne Cannick posted this on her site tonight and I thought I should take time out to mention this article and another noteworthy article on her site. This article, entitled L.A. Black Pride: Official ATB Billboards Go Up in Da Hood shows our advertising dollars are not being spent only in "gay areas" or "gay magazines." It makes me proud to know we are coming home, to "da hood," and sharing our lives with our families, at home, where we live. I hope this trend continues to our magazines, our newsletters, our barbershops and beauty shops and not outside of the family and away from the neighborhood.
Additionally, for those who are in the closet, they now have access which is something I wish I had as a young one coming up. This sign means so much to me I cannot begin to tell you what it will do for others who don't know where to go, who to contact, and may feel they won't be caught going into a known gay establishment. However, and I'm reflecting on where I was as a young person, a lot of folks will go trying to eat up every piece of paper they can get their hands on. Why? Because they know and that's a good thing. Now, let's move to Essence, Black Enterprise, the Wave, etc. and if they do not allow us entry, we need to talk about it like here and here.
Another article on Jasmyne's site that really hit home for me was a letter written by a mother who is "guilt ridden" by her son's coming out and professing he is gay. It is an interesting artlcle which speaks to how parents have a tendency to believe they somehow caused their child to be gay. The article, Dear Jasmyne.... is a must read for those who are having ongoing conversations with parents or who are considering coming out to a parent or parents. It will give you a clue into what you may hear from them and their feelings of guilt.
