Update On Club
Posted at April 10, 2006 10:33 PM in Health/Fitness .This machine fascinates me.
Today I took a day off for bereavement which really translates to a sick day because employers do not give days off for mourning a pet. I could complain about that considering mine are pampered pooches who are members of my immediate family. But, I fell apart this morning and felt it best to just stay home and regroup.
That said, after spying my little Diva Dawg sniffing around the house, particularly the kitchen which was Butch’s domain, I realized that not only do I miss the guy, she does too. We spent the day bonding and sleeping – the entire day I might add – and it was just she and I enjoying the day, even if that meant sleeping, most of the day.
When I awakened I reconsidered my earlier thoughts about the Magic Johnson Sport because it is so close to me and would really mean so much to attend a club without the added injury of traffic, which would certainly be the case if I travel into the very congested Pasadena. Too, I hate rushing to judgment without talking with someone first to get the “real deal.”
Tonight, I went to the club to ask questions and immediately I noticed, like last night, the club was not filled to capacity with long white t-shirts. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against young folks going to the club to work out, however, if they’re just standing around loitering or otherwise getting in the way of folks who are there to really do something, it gets on my nerves and they, quite honestly, started wearing on my nerves.
Now this post is more for a few friends of mine because I know, I’m Mikey and Mikey will ask questions. So, considering my place as the “big picture girl” I went in to ask questions and I did get some answers. From a business stand point, I get it and can appreciate what they did and how they did it. Again, from a business standpoint, I also understand why they had to put a halt to a lot of what was going on. It got out of control.
The young man I spoke with today told me they had over 200 individuals in the club and utilizing the facilities on passes. Additionally, he said they believe they had every kid from every high school in the area in that club and apparently, they were handing off passes to others. The bottom line, for those who joined during the presale, they were unable to use the facilities because there were so many folks there on passes and the paying folks – what business is built on – were just plain out of luck. I get that and fully understand why they dropped the 10-day passes. Additionally, I understand why they had to make it a full scale drop – including everyone – in order to eliminate some of the kids who were walking in there to loiter basically.
The loitering is what made the women I spoke with feel unsafe. It is difficult to watch 30 or 40 young men move about a club as large as this one which, incidentally, is 5000 square feet larger than the Super Sport in Glendale. I learned that today and after touring the place with my rep, he is absolutely right. The place is huge.
Needless to say, I joined the club today and not only was I able to use the sauna, finally, I actually got a chance to utilize a treadmill for approximately 30-40 minutes. Last week, there was no way in God’s green creation I would have a chance to see one of those things let alone use one because there were so many kids playing around with them.
As for Equinox, which I still may join for the spa, the 24-Hour fitness does offer Pilates and yoga training as well as a class for dancers – I know, Ms. Thang, you will like this because I heard it’s a good workout.
Now, as for the nonfunctioning sauna last Friday, the thought was there might have been something wrong with it. He did not know; however, tonight it was functioning beautifully. The sauna is not available between the hours of midnight and 5:00 a.m. In fact, that whole area – pool, sauna, steam room – is shut off between the abovementioned hours.
A bit of news, Magic Johnson is scheduled to make an appearance at the club on April 29th. I plan on being there – well, actually, I plan on being there every day if possible. Because it is a Magic Johnson club and because, but for Magic Johnson we probably would not see a club like this in our areas and as a result, I felt it best to support a Magic Johnson 24-Hour Fitness than support another club. I believe in supporting Black businesses and franchises which is why I felt it best to be “Mikey” and walk in to talk with someone and ask what the heck was going on here?
Like my brother who also suffers with an autoimmune disease, Montel Williams, I too will fight with fitness. Lupus will make you tired and for many years doctors have pointed to every conceivable thing but lupus to explain my fatigue. Over the years I found a good workout, healthy diet, and a positive mental attitude, has helped me overcome some of the effects of this disease. Not to mention I do really want to wear ho clothes one day in my life before passing on. This will mean working out every single day. Since I know I cannot do too much out in the sun because of its supposed adverse effects in mucking up my system, I need an indoor club. Thank God this one is so close there is no excuse not to go.
Today, bottom line, the club is fabulous and thankfully I saw a lot of sisters my age – the 40 plus crowd – come in after work to do their thing. To my friends, it’s okay to go out again the youngins won’t be back until some time in July so come out and get your work out on. I’ll be there, every day, either on the treadmill, stepper, rowing machine, or working off the prednisone currently residing on my abs. And ladies, the machine in the photo above, that thing is something else. Oh My God! Throw that ab lounger out, this is the real deal.
