That Old Rustic Fence
Posted at January 25, 2006 05:26 AM in Lifestyle .It’s gone! It’s too late for it now. The weather has taken it down and the wood has rotted away. I lifted it yesterday and my heart sank. The wood is chipping, the planks are not salvageable, and though it is still beautiful in its state of disrepair, I will have to take it down, the whole thing.
At first I thought a limb had fallen upon it and knocked it down, but no. The years of neglect and weather abuse actually made it frail and though it stood there regal and elegant all of these years I had no clue it had become nothing more than sticks held together with hope.
Today I’ll see if I can have another rebuilt in its spot. Not a redwood, which is popular, but something equally beautiful and equally rustic. It must, however, look as close in color and character as this old rustic fence. Oh well, c’est la vie, life goes on. My work is cut out for me as I will try to take it down this weekend. My heart will ache and I will surely cry -- drama -- but hope springs eternal.
Note to crows and Mr. Squirrel: I will have something nice to perch on soon.
Oh yes, guess who has taken up residency -- again -- under my house?
An old pollcat -- or the same one.
