AALU
- New Jersey
African American
Lesbians United
I co-founded AALU
over 4 years ago because I couldn't find an organization or
outlet for womyn of color in New Jersey. I wanted to be involved
in an organization that addressed my needs and concerns being a
womyn of African decent who happen to be a single parent and a
lesbian.
AALU has come into existence due
to the need for a place where womyn of color can come together
in a safe and comfortable environment. When we come together,
not only to be able to express the joys and a struggle of our
individual daily experiences; but also to learn from each
other's experiences. We all have expertise in one area or
another, but not in all areas relative to our lifestyle, needs
and concerns.
AALU is that liaison that brings
the topics that touch and affect us womyn, mothers, wives,
daughters, professionals, students and womyn of color. Through
AALU, my goal remains to address and focus on health,
educational, political, economical, social, and emotional
issues that effect our lives and loved ones daily. This
organization was created with you in mind. We welcome your input
and support.
Without you there wouldn't be an
AALU. So I encourage my sisters to come
out and experience first hand the
events
planned for 2001, and together, we can celebrate sisterhood in
the spirit of unity.
Peace in the Life,
Tiye
CONGRATULATIONS to AALU’s
for its Fifth Annual Herstory Conference "Envision…Enrich…Empower…
Embracing the Spirit
Within"
That is what was repeated
over and over again on February 23, 2002 when
AALU conducted this
conference. The women who attended this conference came
from all over the Northeastern region including NJ, NY,
CT, PA, DE, VA, and Wash. DC area. The conference included
12 workshops, guest speakers, entertainment, networking
breakfast and luncheon, arts, books, and crafts.
Workshop
choices included: Educational Development -
Financial Planning for Women, So You Want to Get
Published, Investment Strategies, Freedom to Marry,
Knowing Your Legal Rights Personal Development -
Homeopathic Health Care, Racism and Homophobia, Embracing
Our Spirituality, Bridging the Gap: Coming Out Experiences
Relationship Development – Lesbian Parenting, What
Does Love Have to Do With It?, That’s Drama: Working
Through Conflict, Addressing Abuse: In or Out of a
Relationship.
The
pivotal experience took place during the Keynote addresses
from Talethea Best and Valarie Winborne
respectively. Each speaker was able to share their
personal experiences on how we all can envision our goals,
enrich our lives with knowledge and empower ourselves.
Conference attendees walked away with a feeling of
togetherness and inner peace.
Other
highlights included a networking luncheon with musical
entertainment provided by up and coming artist Dani.
Womyn were able to relax and build a bond with each
other due to comfortable and nurturing environment that
GALA’s (Gay and Lesbian Association) Rutgers
University, Newark, New Jersey was able to provide.
Overall,
the success of the conference had a great impact on the
womyn who attended; it echoed the need for such a
conference to take place. AALU looks
forward to next year’s conference in where it will be its
6TH and looks forward to a bigger, longer, and greater
variety conference. Generally, AALU meets on the 4th
Thursday of the month at the Pride Center in North
Brunswick NJ. Visit our website
